Popularization Event

Wednesday 19th October 2022: The popularization of science is a challenge for academic research in that it creates a bridge between universities, places of knowledge and transmission, and the general public. To popularize is first of all to disseminate knowledge pedagogically, to make a phenomenon of any kind understandable (in this case physical) to a non-expert public (of any age). Scientific conferences brig together experts in a very specific field, and we are keen to transmit our passion: acoustics, to the inhabitants of the cities that host the Symposium.

During each conference, we propose a public event of about 1h00/1h30, free and open to all (scientists or not). Between live experiments and playful pedagogical presentation of physical concepts, we try every year to use different prisms (concerts, movie clips) to transmit the basic principles of acoustics and vibrations.

This year, we organize a scientific exhibition on acoustics, vibrations and metamaterials in the art museum Carré d'Art in downtown Nîmes. This touring exhibition "A l'image du son" ("In the image of sound" in English) was previously presented in the 2nd International Biennial of Sound 2022 in Le Mans, and is largely inspired by the exhibition "Acoustics and Beyond" which emerged in the final event of DENORMS COST Action.
This exhibition is accessible during the entire month of October 2022 and is the result of a fruitful collaboration between several research institutions.

Visit of Nîmes Arena

Thursday 20th October 2022 afternoon: 2h00/2h30 guided tour of the historical centre of Nîmes (Nemausus, in Latin), including a visit to the Arena of Nîmes. Built around 70 CE, shortly after the Colosseum of Rome, the Arena is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world. The Arena served as a public event theatre built by the Romans as well as a gladiator fighting arena.

Visit of Aigues-Mortes (National Parc of Camargue)

Saturday 22th October 2022: Extra-day visit to the town of Aigues-Mortes, near the National Parc of Camargue. With an area of over 930 km2, the Camargue is western Europe's largest river delta. It is a vast plain comprising large brine lagoons, cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes. The central area around the shoreline of the Etang de Vaccarès has been protected as a regional park since 1927, in recognition of its great importance as a haven for wild birds.
